This is a monoprint executed without a printing press. The surface is built up through a series of "one-time" hand rubbings and scratchings; working back into the plexiglass plate, adding color and contrast, always allowing the process to take over as in alchemy. Alchemy had been an interest of mine for years and I often feel like an alchemist experimenting with different ways to create an artwork. Viewers should feel the process but also how the image moves in and out of its hiddenness. The idea of "hiddenness" as well as clarity has always interested me. Perhaps this is an influence from the writings of the German philosopher Heidegger. The style is a combination of abstraction (color, form, application) and representation ("mountains"). The work was done for the "Three Kings" celebration (Epiphany), January 6.
